Masatoshi Uchiumi, a true inspiration.

The other day, I was surfing the net and for some reason, thought of an old friend whom I lost touch with years ago. Googled “Masatoshi Uchiumi” and an article of him turned up. A student of mine when I was an English teacher in Tokyo, Masatoshi’s story is one that everyone can learn from. Losing most of his eyesight due to a hormone imbalance at an age when most are planning for their retirement, Masatoshi didn’t allow his circumstances to keep him from pursuing his dreams and living life to the fullest. Reading the article brought back memories of a conversation we had when he told me he was taking up ballroom dancing. I was elated to hear that he placed among the top at Japan Blind Dance Championships back in 2006 – a few years after we last were in contact. And I have a feeling that he’s gone on to bigger things. Masatoshi continues to be one of my biggest inspirations.
